About Us

It’s been over 20 years since the doors first opened under the iconic red and white name ‘CARTERS’ in Torbay. A family run business, first founded by Ian and Christine Carter, the business has expanded from just one small store in Paignton, to seven convenience stores all in prime locations across Torbay.

They have kept the business in the family and now the daily running of the company is done by Ian and Christine’s son, Barney and his wife Bree. Ian and Christine’s daughter, Nikki and her husband Philip Saunders also have 2 convenience stores in Exeter, ‘Saunders’ stores.

This brings the family run chain up to a total of 9 shops in Devon and combined, the two families make up the largest chain of independent newsagents and convenience stores in the South West. This means they have greater buying power and can pass on savings to valued customers. CARTERS take great pride in being ‘Local and Low Cost’!

A Brief History of CARTERS

Ian and Christine first bought Elm Park Post Office in Paignton. Originally a very small newsagent but they saw an opportunity to extend the shop and increase the product range.

The larger store was a huge success within the local community, and encouraged by this, the family quickly expanded by purchasing a newsagent and convenience store in Abbey Road, Torquay.

Next, their son Barney joined the family run business which was followed shortly after by the purchase of two further shops, Roselands in Paignton, and Summercourt in Brixham. Later, CARTERS acquired an empty pharmacy in the busy Brunswick Square in Torre. This was then extended and refitted to give them an additional shop to add to their growing portfolio. Barney’s then-girlfriend, Bree, was now helping in the stores whilst she studied business & accounting at Exeter University.

CARTERS went on to buy a launderette in Hele, which they extended and refitted as the newest addition to the portfolio, while the shops in Roselands and Brixham were sold on.

By 2010 Barneys now wife, Bree, qualified as a chartered accountant and  joined CARTERS as the new Financial Director. Over the next few years, they have continued to expand taking on new shops in Watcombe, Warbro Road, Belgrave Road & most recently Torre Post Office. Barney and Bree have taken over much of the day to day running of the business and are working hard within each store to keep the CARTERS name at the heart of the community.
